Do Your Ears Hang Low

It gets easier after a while. Really. This is good preparation for what's about to transpire with my son over the next few (try 18) years.

In my current class, we have a little guy who is usually quite delightful and very...well...boy. He's a boy. Through and through. From the mother of a son, I mean it in the nicest possible way. And, like a large number of children his age, he has become curious about his and others' bodies. [You can hear this coming a mile away, can't you?] A few times, now, we've had to mention to his parents about a little exposure here and there. It was interesting to have to tell his parents that he asked another girl - even more curious than himself - to scratch a certain area of his anatomy cuz he "thought it'd be fun". (I can hear grown men across the country saying "yeah? and?") His parents are wonderful, intelligent and experienced with two older children who have never given them the run for their money that this one has.

But I must say I wasn't quite prepared when I walked up to the bathroom where he and one of his best buddies were having some kind of discussion I didn't quite catch. When I said "What's going on?" as if I actually were invited into their conversation (which, upon hindsight, I really wish I hadn't), our erstwhile knowledge-seeker turned to me and said, "What's our 'nuts'?"

You have to ask again, just to be sure you hear them right. Indeed, he did just ask me to explain to he and his friend what their nuts were.

I took a big gulp of air and informed him that it was a perfect question for his parents and I expected him to ask them just as soon as they came to pick him up.

You know, there are days...and then there are those days.
