Ice, Ice, Baby

Tomorrow we're supposed to be getting the same nastiness that just hit the South and left 57,000 Atlanta homes without power. (Sharon and Keith need to let me know they're okay.) I thought I'd get another post in before I'm forced out of my home. Should our power go (and the church's very tall maple trees hovering over our property also hang over the power lines - churches make such difficult neighbors), I have no back up anything to heat the house and my kids and I will head to the Holiday Inn or Acapulco, depending on how warm the hotel is and how maxed out the card is - it IS Christmas, after all.

All this music talk of late has got some silly songs running around my head (including that dratted closing song from Blue's Clue's - have I got a problem with this or what?). So let's play Name That Tune.

Name This Tune:

"If there's one thing in my life that's missin'
It's the time that I spend alone."

Name This Tune:
"You want me to act like we've never kissed
You want to forget
Pretend we've never met.
And I've tried and I've tried but I haven't yet..."

Name This Tune:
"Every handout in every town,
Every lock that ain't locked when no one's around."

Name This Tune:
"Es war um 1780
Und es war in Wien
No plastic money anymore"

Name This Tune:
"The last one to know
the last one to show
I was the last one you thought you'd see there."

Name This Tune:
"Fish don't fry in the kitchen
Beans don't burn on the grill"

Extra Credit if you can name all the artists.

Stay warm, y'all!

Warbler,
Here's my best shot:
Song #1 Cool Change by Little River Band
Song #2 I Fall to Pieces by Linda Ronstadt ( before she got all into her Mexican and art song stage.)
Song #3 King of the Road by Roger Miller

Song #4 Rock me Amadeus by Falco ( Ah the great songs of Europe)

Song #5 Friends in Low Places by who else but Garth Brooks

Song #6 I seem to recall it playing as the intro to that Tv sitcom....The Jeffersons???

What happenend to the Christmas songs?

Oops, I'll have to put a little more spirit of Chrismakwanzukah in ye olde empty glass. Martha, my love, an almost perfect score. Patsy Cline, dear, NOT Ronstadt. Although you and I DO travel to the beat of a different drum.

Warbler,dear.
I'd almost forgotten about the wonderful ancient holiday of Chrismakwanzukah! I used to love that old story by Dickens and found it especially moving when the Ghost of Chrismakwanzukah appeared to show Old Ebenezer Scrooge all the good ole' celebrations that he had forgotten.
Now that's a holiday worth remembering!

Anybody who can work in Dickens, Scrooge and an as yet to be recognized holiday in one comment is a master - or mistress, as the case may be.

You are truly the wittiest and most clever.
You're the one that puts together this lovely, brilliant and quite engaging blog!
Really!

Warbler, dear.
While this may appear abit OCD, I do have my reputation to uphold, so just a quick query. RE: Song #2. If I'm only identifying the song by its text-lacking a soundtrack to hear the different voices and singing styles- why would you reject Linda Ronstadt as the artist. She does sing the song. Should I have been able to recognize Patsy Cline based only on the excerpt of lyrics provided?
I await your decision.

Because, Martha dear, while Ronstadt may have re-recorded the song, it is a Patsy Cline identified song - one of her many "signature" pieces. Would you say "My Way" is Frank Sinatra or Paul Anka (or Sid Vicious)? Would you identify Bing Crosby or Kate Smith as the recording artist of White Christmas (although Babs did a lovely version as well)? Original recording artists, by default. Definitive artist by respect. (and record sales) Oh, and cuz it's my blog and I say so.

Singin' for the holiday songs,

Martha, my dear,
the fact that you keep reaching for the shiraz AND you can stand corrected shows that you is my kind o' peeps. And since you are such a lovely guest, and I truly wish your every happiness, how 'bout I say that anyone who can be that OCD over music, gets a perfect score in my book anytime. Come on, you actually knew the words from frickin' "Rock Me Amadeus"? (And if you cheated, dear God, don't tell me) You're the cream in my coffee!

You are so kind. Alas! I'm not standing too correctly after finishing off that shiraz! Don't tell anyone but I loved...really loved 'Rock me Amadeus'. Those were great years, the euro-rock craze- all that wonderful creative energy and now what do we have?
Popular music tends towards such mediocrity- rarely an exciting sound, rarely an inspired song writer, rarely passion. Maybe just a little bit too much faux anger masquerading as true feeling.
But I digress.
I must get back to decorating that ole non-denominational shrub!
Oy! Tannenbaum!

PS. Those word thingies are a bit impossible --especially after a lovely shiraz.

Martha, My Dear,
I, too, Ran So Far Away - I liked a great deal of that 80's euro-cheese. As for "today's" music, you're right again. But you let me play some of my original stuff for you and you might just have faith in the future of music again.

Now, see, I'm sure these word thingies are actually trying to tell me something. This one is telling me to "Get thee to the Bay of Tasmania." (Does Tasmania have a bay?)Maybe that's just "Taz, baby".

You're the starch in my collar!

I would love to hear your original music sometime, I'm a longtime fan.
I recall your island appearances, your dynamic direction of the island ecumenical choir as well as your lively concert at St. Andrew's a few summers ago.. a wonderful evening of music-- ( although it surprised me about how many classical music compositions were the soundtrack for some Bugs Bunny-Looney Tunes cartoons.)

Tasmania does have a bay maybe these word thingies are like some digital oujia board? Perhaps one more glass and everything will be much clearer.

Oh, wassail! I had a friend in NYC who used to actually make wassail every Christmas Eve morning and bring it over warm in mason jars as we felt the holiday spirit. I'd try to find a recipe to continue the tradition but I think we all know better. Besides, I haven't made one friend yet.

Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves sp brown...

Here's to virtual wassail*** as we raise our overflowing mugs to a toast in cyberspace. Perhaps Tiny Tim said it best ( the Dickens character not the singer/uke player)

"God bless us everyone."
May your Christmas overflow with love and laughter and may your New Year brim with happiness and health!
Cheers
